BRI has close to 70 years of experience in cryobiology. Incorporated in 1948 in Chicago, Illinois and originally operating under the name of the American Foundation for the Study of Genetics in Madison, Wisconsin, the organization pioneered the cryopreservation of bovine semen which is the foundation of in vitro fertilization techniques used for agricultural purposes.
Renamed American Foundation for Biological Research in 1956 and doing business in the state of Maryland since the late 1960s as Biomedical Research Institute or BRI for short, BRI has provided researchers and institutions around the world with low temperature storage space for clinical specimens. Our capabilities to store and distribute precious biomaterials help speed research and hasten the discovery of cures and treatments.
BRI is the biorepository for two major vaccine clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) at the NIH. Over 5 million specimens including peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), plasma, serum and other body fluids are stored in the BRI facility to support two programs critical to the treatment and prevention of AIDS.
- The AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) supports a network of expert clinical and translational investigators and therapeutic clinical trials. ACTG investigators also serve as a resource for HIV/AIDS research, treatment, care, training and education in their local communities.
- The International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials program (IMPAACT) is a global network of investigators, institutions, community representatives and other partners. It is organized to evaluate interventions for treatment and prevention of HIV infection in infants, children, adolescents and pregnant/postpartum women through the administration of clinical trials.
In addition, BRI provides custom biorepository services to companies, medical institutions and academic and government laboratories.
